How much does bulk excavation cost in Melbourne?
Three things set the price: how many cubic metres have to move, how easily trucks can get in and out, and what the soil is classified as when it reaches the tip. Disposal is often a bigger number than the digging itself. Most residential bulk digs we quote land between $8,000 and $40,000, and commercial work is priced per stage. Every quote is fixed after a free site visit.
Can I hire a bulk excavator with an operator instead?
Yes. Bulk excavation hire is wet hire: a 20T to 30T excavator with a ticketed operator, by the day or the week, with tandem tippers added if you want the cartage covered as well. It suits builders and civil contractors who are managing the dig themselves. If you would rather hand over the whole scope, we price it as a fixed job.
How do you work out the volume of a bulk dig?
From the drawings where they exist: existing levels against finished levels gives the cut in solid cubic metres. Dug soil bulks up once it is loosened, commonly by a quarter to a third, so the truck count is worked out on the loose volume and not the size of the hole. That is why two quotes for the same hole can differ, and why we show the volume we priced.
Where does the soil go, and why does classification matter?
In Victoria, soil leaving a site has to be classified under EPA rules before anyone can receive it. Clean fill can go to another site that needs it, which is the cheapest outcome. Anything classified as contaminated must go to a facility licensed for that category, and the tip fee climbs with each category. On older inner and middle suburb blocks it is worth having the soil tested before the dig is priced.
Can you do a bulk dig on a tight suburban block?
Usually, yes. Most of our work is on established streets, not open paddocks. We plan the truck route and the turnaround first, use a smaller machine (the fleet starts at 1.7T) to open up the access, then bring the larger excavator in once there is room to swing. Where trucks cannot get onto the block, load-out happens from the street and we plan that with the builder before the job starts.
What slows a bulk excavation down?
Trucks, almost always. An excavator can dig faster than spoil can leave, so the program is set by how many truck cycles the site, the street and the distance to the tip allow in a day. Wet weather is the second factor, because clay sites turn unworkable after heavy rain. A house basement or a pool is typically a few days. Staged commercial digs are programmed with the builder week by week.
Do you provide SWMS and work under a builder's site rules?
Yes. SWMS are available for every job, operators hold White Cards and machine tickets, and we regularly work for builders, developers and civil contractors under their inductions and site rules.
