Apollo Earthworks drainage and civil works in Melbourne
Overview

The civil works that hold it all together.

Civil and structural works are what turn a raw site into a finished build. Drainage that actually works. Retaining walls that hold the line. Concrete that lasts. Driveways and car parks that look the part.

Apollo Earthworks delivers across all of it. From small residential retaining walls and driveways through to commercial car parks and council footpath rehabilitation, we have the equipment, the operators, and the know-how to get it done.

Working with builders, councils, civil contractors and developers across the greater Melbourne area, we sit at the structural end of the job and finish it properly.

Process

How a civil works job runs from quote to pour

Civil scope - retaining walls, drainage, driveways, slabs - usually intersects engineers, surveyors, and inspectors. Apollo runs the program end-to-end so you have one number to call.

01

Quote and engineering review

We walk site, read the engineer's drawings, check fall, drainage outlets, and access, then return a fixed itemised quote. If engineering documentation is missing for a wall, slab or drainage run, we flag it before we book.

02

Set out and excavate

Footings, wall toes, drainage trenches, and slab pads set out from engineer's pegs or surveyor marks. Dial Before You Dig confirmed before any blade goes in the ground. Spoil removed direct to tipper.

03

Base prep and compaction

Crushed rock, sand or scoria placed and compacted to spec. Levels held to the millimetre because driveways and slabs that miss spec at base prep cost ten times more to fix at finish.

04

Forms, reinforcement, drainage

Formwork erected, reo placed to engineer's design, agi drain and sub-soil drainage installed where the scope calls for it, joints planned to spec. Inspector booked in if the job requires it before pour.

05

Pour and finish

Concrete poured, screeded, floated, and finished to the spec on file - broom, exposed aggregate, or trowel. Curing managed properly so the slab holds strength. Retaining wall blocks or sleepers laid and pinned to engineering detail.

06

Backfill, reinstatement, handover

Wall backfilled and topsoiled, drainage covered and grassed where required, formwork stripped clean, site swept and cleared. Final inspection signed off if it is part of scope. Invoice itemised and issued the same week.

Cost factors

What drives civil works cost in Melbourne?

Civil works pricing across Melbourne sits on a wider band than excavation because the scope changes so much from wall to drain to slab. The drivers below are the ones we walk through with every client at quote stage.

Apollo's quotes are fixed and itemised so the structural, engineering, and finish costs are all clearly visible.

Material choice

Concrete sleeper walls, masonry block, treated pine, and natural rock all sit at very different price points. Plain concrete is cheaper than exposed aggregate. Choosing the material early lets us hold price stable through to install.

Engineering and permits

Retaining walls over 1m and most structural slabs need engineer-certified drawings. Concrete crossovers and footpath works often need council Report and Consent. We coordinate the documentation but the third-party fees flow through to the client at cost.

Site fall and ground conditions

A flat block is the cheapest civil scenario. Steep fall, reactive clay, rock seams, or wet ground all add to excavation hours and may need extra structural detail to keep the wall or slab true over time.

Drainage scope

Agi drain behind a wall, stormwater connection to the legal point of discharge, sub-soil drainage, and pit and pipe systems each carry their own line-item cost. Drainage is one of the easiest items to cut for budget but almost always the dearest one to retrofit.

Finish standard

Exposed aggregate, decorative concrete, broom or plain finish all sit at different price points. Tighter tolerances on commercial slabs cost more in float work and curing time than residential standard. We quote against the spec, not the average.

FAQ

Civil works Melbourne, common questions

What civil works does Apollo Earthworks cover?

+

Retaining walls, drainage and stormwater, driveways and car parks, and concrete slabs, structural works, footpaths and rehabilitation. We work with builders, civil contractors, councils, and owner builders across residential, commercial, and infrastructure jobs in Melbourne.

How much does a residential retaining wall cost in Melbourne?

+

Most residential retaining walls fall between $250 and $700 per square metre installed, depending on height, material (concrete sleeper, masonry block, treated timber, rock), engineering, and access. Walls over 1m typically require engineering certification, which Apollo coordinates. Quotes are fixed after a site visit.

Do you handle stormwater and site drainage?

+

Yes. We install agricultural drains, stormwater connections, sub-soil drainage, pit and pipe systems, and grated trench drains. We coordinate with plumbers and engineers where required and back-fill, compact, and reinstate the surface above the run.

Can you do concrete driveways and slabs?

+

Yes. Apollo handles the full driveway and slab program: cut, base prep, formwork, reinforcement, pour, and finish. We work to engineer's specifications on structural slabs and to standard residential build standards on driveways. Exposed aggregate, broom, and plain finishes available.

Do you work with engineers and surveyors?

+

Yes. Civil works almost always touch engineer drawings, surveyor set-out, and inspection points. We work to the documentation provided and book inspections where required. If you need a referral for an engineer or surveyor in Melbourne we can usually help.

Are you fully insured for civil works?

+

Yes. Apollo carries full public liability insurance, all operators hold White Card and machine tickets, and SWMS documentation is provided for every civil job on request. Certificate of Currency available.

How quickly can you start a civil works job?

+

We attend site for a free quote within 24 to 48 hours. Booking typically locks in works within one to two weeks of quote acceptance for residential scope. Larger civil and commercial programs are scheduled around engineering and permits. Call 0431 560 908 for current availability.
